Shanghai Barber

In the years of old Hong Kong, the Shanghai Barber Shop was more than just a place for a haircut; it represented an old-era standard of elegance, respectability, and refined living.

Starting in the 1950s, large numbers of barbers from Shanghai brought their superb craftsmanship and service standards to Hong Kong. Almost overnight, the "Shanghai style" of service became synonymous with high-class taste.

The charm of the Shanghai Barber Shop lies in its complete and meticulously performed service ritual. Barbers, wielding sharp razors, would meticulously shave and groom their customers' faces with practiced, seamless movements. Sitting in the wooden barber chair, a steaming hot towel placed over the face—the warmth of the steam permeating the skin—was a rare moment of relaxation for men of that time. The entire process of "cutting hair" and "washing hair" was not merely about personal grooming; it was an embodiment of enjoying life in the old days.

The remaining Shanghai Barber Shops are the best witnesses to these traditional crafts, still holding fast to that commitment to "beauty" amid the shifting light and shadow of time.

This time, we took inspiration from the Shanghai Barber Shop, combining iconic elements such as the barber chair and the spinning red, white, and blue pole to present the "sense of ritual" from old Hong Kong.
