The Human Touch in Bittersweet Times

"Healing the sick, saving the world, and resolving difficulties and worries for the common folk." This is a portrait of the nearly century-long history of Hong Kong's herbal tea shops (Leung Cha Po).

In old Hong Kong, before the development of a sophisticated medical system, herbal tea shops didn't just sell herbal tea; they also sold traditional Chinese medicine and raw herbs, truly acting as "community clinics" set up especially for ordinary citizens.

From the "bachelor's tea" of the 1950s (which many single men would order for colds and dizziness) to its peak in the 1960s, the herbal tea shop was the best place for neighbors to socialize. For just one or two dimes, you could sip a bowl of herbal tea, listen to the radio, watch RTV, or even coin-op jukeboxes to play popular songs. The herbal tea shop was the "community hall" of its time, carrying the memories of neighbors resting, cooling off, and sharing daily gossip.

With the economic take-off in the 1970s, improved living standards, and the popularization of Western medicine, herbal tea shops experienced a period of decline. However, by the late 1980s, they reappeared in bustling city centers with a fresh new look, becoming a path to wellness and health for a new generation.

This time, inspired by Hong Kong's herbal tea shops, we have combined their unique Chinese lettering with their historical stories, allowing everyone to once again feel the Hong Kong spirit of "drinking a bowl of bitter tea, listening to a story."

The rise and fall of the herbal tea shop is a microcosm of Hong Kong's economic and social development. Let us use the art of text to pick up this bowl of "Special" herbal tea, which is filled with the human touch of Hong Kong and the feeling of bitterness leading to sweetness.
